Scottstone BridgeWest of the “The Big Tree”, is a bridge over the river at the end of Watery Lane called Scotchstone (or Scottstone). It was allegedly the place where people could get into the town via the Balheary Road without paying toll. [It has been suggested that this is the origin of the phrase “he got off, scot-free”, i.e., he got off without paying tax because scot was an old word for a tax or toll] |
